Many years ago David and I were at an office supplies conference and although we were competitors we were still good friends and sat together. A gentleman named Irwin Helford, took to the stage. Irwin had taken the mail order catalogue Viking, unique in its time to a staggering $1.7 billion turnover and had made a huge impact in the UK. At the end of his presentation he asked for any questions; one delegate who, was obviously not happy with the Viking invasion into the UK stated.
‘You would not have made such an impact in the UK without the technology, logistics and the financial resource, at your disposal.’
Irwin Replied.
‘Take away the sophisticated data base management, take away our state of the art pick pack process, and you can also take away the distribution network. But leave me the people and I’ll do it all again.’
